Derek Hambly

Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Derek Hambly has been painting professionally for nearly 60 years. His extensive experience in the land down under led him to the U.S. over twenty years ago where he’s traveled all over the country showcasing his stunning landscapes and abstract works. Derek lives in the Madison, Wisconsin area where he continues to be inspired by nature and rich colors.
Derek is a DEVIATE vet and is ready to be back once again, this time with a live painting experience that will give guests a behind the scenes look into his artistic process.
Tell us about you.
I've been a professional painter since 1967 and started by painting expressionist landscapes, then focused on abstract work for years, and now back to mostly landscape works.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Nature, movement, rich, thick paint, color. I used to try to boss my paint around and make it do what I wanted, but in the past year or two, the paint bosses me around, and tells me where it wants to go.
Knowing DEVIATE is an experiential, interactive art event, how do you envision participating and building your booth?
I would like to paint live again, like I did 2 years ago, to a moving landscape played on a video on a wall within my booth. The audience seemed fascinated.
How did you find out about DEVIATE and why do you want to be involved?
I participated in the first one in Beloit and it was very fun!
